The other day we read a story about a woman who was diagnosed with celiac disease. She had to take off some of her fingers and toes to be able to eat. She had to make a decision about what she would do with her hands and feet and it was a very difficult one. She decided to go to a clinic to get some help and to do all that she could to make herself feel better.
So I think what I’m getting at is that the idea of self-awareness is a big one, but it’s not a very useful one. Yes, the idea of self-awareness can be useful in some situations. Most of us are aware of our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions. We know what to do when we have to do them, and when we’re bored we know what to do when we get bored.
Self-awareness, though, is just a vague idea that happens to be true. It doesn’t tell us what the best way to do something is. When our brains think they’ve identified a best way, usually they find the next best way. But when they don’t, they do whatever they can to make themselves do it, and that is what self-awareness is about.
Self-awareness is about being the master of your own life. It’s also about knowing when you are going to do something because you are the captain of your own ship. Self-awareness, though, is also about knowing how to think for yourself and being able to say, “Hey, I’m in charge of my life, and I make all of the decisions. I don’t need you to do things for me.
Self-awareness is a tricky thing. It is one of the first skills developed by our brains, but it is also one of our hardest to develop. In order to develop it, you need to know how to think and act like yourself, but also what your life is like.

The game is the point where you say, “I’m not a person anymore. I’m a game.” As fun as this game may be, there are other games out there that are just much more fun.
