It is difficult to have a conversation with the Detroit Wayne County Health Authority. We know that the health authority is focused on the “one health” concept, but they have never told us what that means in reality. At any rate, we are here to learn.
The health authority is the government agency that runs Detroit, Wayne, and Macomb Counties. Their mission is to ensure the health of the whole county, and to that end they have a variety of programs like the Gme Consortium which brings together doctors, nurses, social workers, and other support staff. The health authority has a website which explains the program and the services it provides.
In its first days, they were pretty vague about what they did and when. There were a lot of questions about how it would work, whether it would be a public or private program, and what its budget was. But the health authority has now been able to provide the public with a pretty good answer. They actually have a very clear timeline of what they want to accomplish and how they expect it to be accomplished.
What the health authority actually does is take health issues from the private sector and put them on the state level. This may be a really good thing, because now the state has a new source of revenue, and also a new way to educate the public about health issues. This is great, because the state is already inundated with health-related information and resources. Now they can provide them to the public at a lower cost.
We’re not exactly sure what their ultimate goal is, but we’re sure it’s not a lot more than “we’re taking health-related issues and putting them on the state level.” In a press release they say they want to “better serve the public,” and we assume they want to make sure that everyone has the same kind of information.

Well the whole idea of government taking health care seems like a bad idea in the beginning because governments have their hands in the health care pie, and it might be hard for them to get a handle on it. But we’re talking about government health agencies, not small local hospitals and clinics. And I’m sure if the state took care of its own health, it wouldn’t be that hard to get a handle on it.

The state of Michigan has tried to get a handle on local health care by setting up a new agency called the authority health, but in the end it only really cares about health care for poor people. The government has tried to create a consortium of health clinics and hospitals to take care of all those less fortunate, but now we know the idea is really just a way to keep track of who has health care and who doesnt.
