In a world filled with distractions, it’s not surprising that so many people with severe mental health issues feel disconnected from others and themselves. At Everett Clinic, Dr. Nicole Smith says that mental health isn’t always easy but it’s always possible. The clinic is known for helping patients with severe depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders, as well as for managing people with substance abuse problems.
In its new location, the clinic is located in a small, unassuming building on a quiet street in downtown Austin. Each patient is sent an online form with basic background information about themselves, and a series of six questions about life and mental health. The questions are designed to get a person to open up, which is a huge accomplishment in itself. The answers are then shared with the person and the person can take the information in and share it with family and friends.
We were blown away by the fact that the questions are really designed for people who are experiencing severe abuse. In fact, one of the questions asks “Have you ever had a parent/guardian neglect or sexually abuse you?” The answer to that question, and another question, are all things we have covered by now: parents, guardians, and sexual abuse. We know that the questions are really geared toward individuals who have experienced severe abuse, and we are really proud of that.
Some people ask us about our experience and we tell them that we’re just another group of people who have to deal with the same issues. We think that’s awesome, and we hope that everyone experiences exactly the same, because that’s all that should matter.
The truth is, most people who have experienced some form of severe abuse are not going to be able to answer all of the questions that everyone else has. We’ve learned that what happens to us is different, and we try to help people who have experienced abuse to see that. We are not psychiatrists, we are not psychologists, and we do not have the knowledge to treat people who have experienced severe abuse.
The main thing to remember is that we don’t have the knowledge to diagnose any abuse. We don’t have the ability to give someone a diagnosis. Our job is to try to help people understand what is happening, and when confronted by this situation we are going to try to find the answers to help the person understand.
That’s the whole point.
We are not a mental health provider, we are a behavioral health provider. Our job is to help people understand what is happening, and when confronted with this situation we are going to try to help the person understand. Our job is not to diagnose or treat. We dont do that. We see clients and provide them services without any medical or mental health background.
But as you can see in everett clinic behavioral health, we do have medical training. We have a license from the state. We are licensed mental health providers, and our license is a requirement for our license to practice.
