This blog post discusses how Nurse Jamie Pillow’s life changed when she went to work at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). *In this role, she discovered that there were many gaps in patient care including: lack of education about wound prevention methods; no access to basic necessities like toiletries or clothing items necessary after discharge from the hospital; no coordination with area pharmacies resulting in patients being discharged without needed medications; no ability for patients to request same-day appointments.
Pillow has worked with HCMC leadership and other nursing colleagues to address these issues, implementing programs that are already making a huge difference in the lives of our surgical patients.
Nurse Jamie Pillow is also an active nurse leader on her unit, helping others learn how they too can make positive changes at their hospital by using evidence based practices and becoming more patient focused while maintaining high quality care standards. The work Nurse Pillows does as one of many caring nurses is changing hospital culture from within.

What kind of nurse am I? You could say I’m a Leader! But you might also say I’m a Community Advocate! It’s really all about giving back to the people who need it most.
