It’s a little-known but highly prized trick that is also incredibly self-aware. Some dog owners can’t help but stare blankly at their dog’s face while they walk around the house. They’ve learned that their dog is looking at them and judging them. This usually happens to them while they’re walking their dog or when they’re walking their dog while they’re watching TV.
Of course, this is just a trick of the eye (and a great way to see if your dog is doing what you want her to) but it can be a very telling indicator of what your dog is thinking. They can even be a bit more aware while theyre in the doghouse, because theyll notice if your dog is too interested in the couch or some other object.
Another thing dogs can do to be aware of their owners is sit. I know it sounds crazy but there is a very good reason why dogs sit on people. They actually use their bodies to try and find a spot to sit, and if you sit on them long enough they will actually get the message that you don’t want to be there. It’s a very effective way for a dog to get a message that a person is not interested in them.
It seems like a lot of dog owners are afraid of dogs being too focused on humans. Many dogs will sit right on the human and stare at them intensely for a good few minutes. So, for some reason, some dog-owners are afraid to start an argument with their dog, even if the dog is just going to sit there and stare into their eyes. This is a valid fear, because dogs are smart creatures who can figure out who is trying to mess with them and who is not.
In contrast, I think many people who are afraid of dogs are afraid of the wrong kinds of arguments. The right kinds of arguments are hard to make in the first place, but once you have a few, you can start to use them to your advantage. For instance, when I was about seven I had a dog named Hoke. He was one of those dogs that you could sit on and stare at and talk to for hours.
Maybe it was all the other dogs that confused us about whether or not he was a friendly or a mean dog, but at the time I thought he was just sweet. The only time I’ve ever seen him make any effort to defend himself is when he tried to rip a piece of my shirt off.
Unfortunately, Hoke is a very smart dog who could easily overpower you if he wanted to and is a very loyal friend. He has a very high tolerance for pain and his love of attention is well known.

Hoke has been a very loyal friend to our family, and there was some drama with him and his owner when they moved here, but we have no plans to change that. We can see Hoke getting along great with everyone else, and he has become a very good friend to our family. He just doesn’t like to do it himself, and we have no plans to change that either.
